Thanks Matt, what are the benefits besides having clear water?

It said it removes ICK, but my fish don't get Ick....
what other benefits do you want besides the clearest water youve ever seen?

for whats its worth, you can switch a diatom from one tank to another without having to recharge or prime again, ive done it several times.

- turn the filter off
- take a 2 liter bottle and cut the opening off
- stick both intake/outlet in the bottle, making sure to keep them submerged.
- transfer to new tank, drop tubes in water, making sure again they stay submerged.
- turn on, DONE

once you have used it and get the hang of recharging it and switching tanks it easy to use, keeps my oscar tank clean and clear

well i actually post it "why" on an other post, but anyway, my friend has a d-1 and he used on his 435G 270G 220G 155G 90G for 2 - 3 hours per tank once a month, and it was so clean that it looks like as the tank was empty, i'm not saying XL is bad, but XL takes way too much powder, if you'd like to save few bucks in your pocket, i say d-1 is the way to go. (i'm getting a d-1 just because it saves alot money on the powder)

I like the magnum better b/c its an all around more useful filter depending on what you need, and if you need a diatom filter you mix some diatomacious earth into a water solution, let the Mag load up with the DE and it works just as well as a diatom specific filter IME. But wait! need chem filtration? just load up the mag's basket with aragonite/peat/carbon/NO3/PO4/NH 3/4 remover and pop it in get your results and go back to particulate filtration.

Powder is extremely cheap bro. Plus the XL filters 2 times the water per hour and has a much larged debris catching abilities.

I had no idea I could use DE in my HOT mag... I've just been using the micron filter.

yup, just mix some DE into a pitcher or bucket and put the inlet/outlet in there, fire it up and the micron cartredge will clog up with DE. It will reduce flow but it really dose a nice job of polishing out the water. Yea its prob not quite as effective as a true diatom filter, esp on anything real big. But like I said the added flexability of use for that mag makes it totaly worth it.
