Dicrossus foirni progress

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Matt, make sure to check out my last thread for photos of the adults. The females look mostly like other Dicrossus (except the extra row of spots) but the males are totally different. I'm excited for them to hurry up and put on some more size.

Guess who scored six more D. foirni? This guy! Marvin listed some more on Aquabid today and I snagged them. Let's hope this increases the chances of some pairs since I only had five originally. I'm not too concerned about the inbreeding because they're only F1.

That's awesome, Ryan! You have been getting some really nice and uncommon cichlids lately. I really like these new guys. I'm sure that with the number of D. Foirni that you are keeping you are bound to get a pair or two. Good luck and I hope you'll have plenty of fry down the road. I have a small tank that I'm converting to a planted tank with some Rams. I guess that's my small step toward keeping some of the smaller species of cichlids. BTW did you ever solve the problem you were having with your municipal water? I hope so.

I haven't really solved my water issue, I've just been taking a different approach to it. I've been trying to find ways to reduce my water changes slightly on large tanks (pothos and Purigen to keep the nitrates/DOCs down) and also filtering the water through carbon. It's going to get expensive to constantly change out carbon but I'm still looking into something more long term. The smaller tanks are a lot easier to manage, hence my shift to working with some of the smaller fish.

That's great to hear, Ryan!

Cool species Ryan I was just reading about them. Good luck, I hope you get some fry one day they would be a great addition to one of my blackwater tanks.

I doubt I'll keep all 11 once they are spawning age. You may be able to own some sooner than you think. :)

Here are some quick pictures tonight before a water change. You can see a couple of the tiny 3/4" ones that I received this week. I didn't realize how much mine had grown and changed until I saw them next to the new ones.

Still a little way to go yet, but I definitely can see one male...
