Dicrossus foirni progress

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just an update -- it appears all seven fish are male. :( I have gone back through the seller's feedback on Aquabid and emailed everyone else who bought D. foirni from him, and so far it sounds like most people ended up with all males. A couple think they have one female but aren't sure yet. I know water parameters probably affect the sex ratios of the fry to some degree, so maybe most of the ones sold were male. It's a real bummer to know that it's the end of the line for these fish unless I find a female somewhere.

An update on my Dicrossus. Out of seven fish, I definitely have six males. I cannot tell if the seventh fish is a runted male or a female. It doesn't show any female characteristics but it also hasn't grown nearly as large or gotten the exaggerated fins. It still shows a bit of red on the dorsal and blue on the pelvic fins which doesn't seem consistent with the females I've seen pictures of, but who knows?

You'll notice that five of the males have maroon/red dorsals while one has a creamy blue/white dorsal. He definitely stands out. I'm not sure why he's completely different than his brothers.

Apologies for the crap pictures -- they're tiny fish and dart about really fast, so they don't hold still for anything. Still, lovely colors and finnage. I really hope that seventh fish is a female. There are also a male and female Enigmatochromis lucanusi in the tank, so you may see them around in a few pictures. ;)

That sucks about the sex ratio, though they all do look quite good. Definitely a beauty of a species. I do find it amusing that you have one with a blue fin in with a species that used to be called Pelvicachromis sp. 'blue fin'

And I wouldn't mind if you get some good E. lucanusi pics and post them up in the westie section. Along with A. thomasi, they rank as my fav westies.
