My T5's use 54w each, total of 216w.

They do come in different wattages though (24 - 80 watts), I did consider the 4 x 80w luminare but I bet the tubes are ridiculously expensive.
T5's use whatever electricity they are rate to but when compared to a T8 of the same wattage they produce around 50% more light, add a reflector and the % increases again.

Indeed, comparing watts is fine, but it doesn't tell you anything more than the wattage of the fixture. You should compare lumens per watt to get an accurate representation of how much light per watt - which I think is what you're trying to compare.

I would also recommend some sort of reflector. If you are tight on $$ you can get some mylar reflective wrapping paper from a dollar store and glue that onto the current shop light reflector(which I assume is just white) I did this with my old light strips once, and it def made a difference. for glue use either a two part epoxy or some sort of crazy glue or a fine mist spray mount glue. do not use hot glue or the industrial grade spray mount.

I put a 30watt 18k aqua-glo t8 bulb on my tank and its just as crispy white as can be. Granted, I have single 36" bulb 'system.' I changed from the old aqua-glo bulb (looks like a t10 based on diameter) that came with my tank, which gave the whole deal a purplish/pinkish/blueish hue. Tried the sun-glo (6k'ish, 30watts) and it just looked WAYY too yellow, so I tried a new aqua-glo and its perfect.

The rest of this conversation is lost on me....but if you're just looking for good neutral lighting, I think the aqua-glo bulbs are pretty good.

Yea i was gonna get that reflective air duct tape. It will adhere to the fixture and be reflective.

I use phillips F32T8 TL950 bulbs and get a nice light.

ok bought some reflective tape and taped lights. Bought aqua-glo 18,000K t8 bulbs and believe it or not they actually looked worse than my 6,500 daylight lowes bulbes. Made the water look muddy and dark.

Yeah im sure i have tannins in the water but. I didnt think it would make the water get that dark from one light to the other. I could be wrong. But even just looking at the light it looks more blue the aqua-glo compared to the 6,500k Lowes.
