Did a water change yesterday, now my fish look tired and gasping.

I try to wait about 5 minutes after putting in the Amquel and NovAqua before I put that new water in my tank. Then I stir it up a little bit.

But maybe you're right. I'll add some more Amquel/Novaqua to my tank water right now and see if that helps. Half of my fish look normal and the other half look tired and like something's wrong. My aro won't swim at the surface.

Your problem is you are underfiltered. I have a 2217 on a 75g with 3 fish, and I'm already ready to upgrade. It's rated for 264gal/hr, but it gets nowhere near that once it's full of media and hosed up and running on a tank. You have a ton of fish in your tank, and if you have an ammonia reading, it means your filter isn't removing it fast enough, simple as that.

What probably happened is, you have chronic low levels of ammonia due to underfiltration, and then when you did a water change, traces of chlorine caused your bio-filter to take a little hit, causing ammonia to rise even higher than normal until the bacteria caught back up.

If that's what really happened, how can I fix it? I'm planning on bringing some fish back to the LFS and feeding less. I just did a WC and added extra Amquel. Anything else I can do besides buying another filter? (I'm a little broke at the moment).

More filtration is the long term fix, but taking the spray tube off will help slightly as it restricts flow a bit. I took mine off and just have the open tube discharging into my tank.

I put in an extra oxygen pump/airstone to help with water flow and oxygenation. Is that going to help? If you're suggesting I take the spray bar off to RESTRICT the flow, then maybe I'm doing the wrong thing.

No no, I said it restricts flow when it's installed, so remove it to increase flow. Sorry I worded that a little awkwardly.
