did i do something wrong?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
lol be careful with your gaiter thay like to jump. mine has done it twice on me the first time i found him dried up on the floor(was at work) the second time im not to shour how he did it the tank has a cover on it. and lol the are resilient little buggers that is one reason i don't want to have to get rid of him.

the peacock bass usually is the more aggressive of the two and will overly stress the gar.

Alligator gars are tough fish. If a cichla started something, a gar could kill it easily. I have seen alligator gars kill fish way bigger than themselves. They can be insane fish, I wouldn't worry about a cichla stressing a gar I would worry about a gar getting annoyed and killing the cichla.

That a huge size different. not smart.

gosh where on earth to start.

basically to sum it all up. Do your research on alligator gars before throwing them in a tank with tankmates. a gator - cichla combo is NOT going to work.

could you provide an example for the part in bold?

also, the second statement is bodering on anthropomorphism...doesn't really work that way.

actually, converting the gar's diet was not wrong.it did not "triggered" the "aggression" .there was no aggression from the gar.what you did was putting the gar in a tank with potential preys.what happened was an unsucessful predation.hehe

well here is your updater the gar is know in a 150g tube in my pet room and alone. he has tryed to eat not only the bass but my tsn , marbol , and might have taken a shot at my knife as well but dident see that attack only a few scratches . my tsn is 17 inches my marbol is small but never comes out from under the rock dont know how he got to him. and the knife is what i think is close to full grown at 19 inches. i think my gar has gotin unstable. lol:screwy:

There is a reason gator gar are always reccomeneded to be kept alone or with other gator gars, they are apex predetors. which means they are high if not the highest fish on the feeding chain natively. For whatever reason he's figured out he's got teeth... and they work. i woulnd't say it's inaccurate to say the fish may have been "annoyed" is anthromorphic.. I've seen cichlids intentionally harass other fish.. from what I understand of PBass this is entirely plausable and the bass being territorial or ignoreing the gars displays could easily have resulted in the ensueing problem. which would explain how all of a sudden the gar is trying to eat it's tank-mates... I will disagree that they are "insane" just apex predetors.

Most incompatablity in fishtanks is due to ignorance of the animals natural behaviors.
