Did I find a steal or... ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my guess is safety factor is an arbitrary rating of the overall stress on the tank based on the tanks dimensions and water weight. They didnt give any units of measurement or a scale? kinda useless number without some meaning

Yeah, not really sure. There's no scale, no reference, and no baseline as nothing is rated factor of 1. The lowest I saw was a factor of 1.80.

I still think it's a handy chart though.

Safety Factor:

The variability of the strength of glass due to limitations of the manufacturing process means a suitable safety factor must be used when calculating glass thickness. The factor commonly used is 3.8. While not a perfect guarantee, it will remove all risk bar that of damaged or very poor quality glass.

It's like lifts and straps etc their all rated to hold 2x what they say incase the consumer over loads them, so the number means its 2x the strength needed, that's why the length makes that number decrease.

Ah that makes sense I suppose

I get what you're saying. a Factor of 1 would mean that you are at the theoretical strength limit of that particular thickness, while a factor of 4 would mean you are only putting 25% load on the glass.

I did some clean up on the tank this morning and then ran some errands. Ran by petsmart and took a look at some other 55glass, and I noticed how much beefier 9mm glass looks compared to 6mm. I realize it's only a 50% increase, but it's much more impressive to the eye.

While everything I've been told here says that the tank *should* work, I think I'm going to just resell the tank and hold the money till I can find a 75 or 90 to upgrade the current 55 from. It is a nice tank and I may be able to get more than I paid for it which is always nice, but I'm just not sure I trust it being that it would go into my carpeted home office. I do work from home and if this tank were to fail it would be a catastrophe, nevermind the loss of fish.

I guess it's always better to sleep on an idea than jump in both feet first.
