Did I miss out on something special??

A few years back blueberry oscars started popping up, they are dyed.

You didn't miss out on anything.

maybe it could be dyed maybe not, there's a lot of new color variants available today for oscars, i believe there's a gold and copper? which aren't painted but blue just seems a bit odd, perhaps its a crossbreed?

White fish are easily color-fed and hormoned to produce different colors. It doesn't necessarily have to be dyed or painted. There were some "pink" discus several years ago that supposedly bred true, but it turns out they were white pigeon discus that had been dyed pink by feeding them hormones. More specifically, a mix called CR-6 (methyl testosterone for blue + Carophyll pink for red). This mix is incorporated into dry food and fed to the discus.

I'm not saying that this is the case with the oscars, but it's definitely plausible, especially with a white fish that would easily take on the color.

I'm sure this is how the "blueberry oscars" were created. One store I went to a few years ago also had "strawberry oscars" in the same tank as blueberry oscars -- they were dyed pink.

I bought an oscar with a bit of a blue shade to it once. Not bright blue so it was obvious, but an albino that looked almost blue tinted. As it grew the blue faded and ended up a lutino. Cool looking O though, sadly he's not with me anymore or I'd post a pic.

True. And they are mainly dyed, fed dye, or injected with dye.

You can selectively breed and breed, you aren't going to get a Oscar to turn blue or pink.

You can scour every body of water in south america, you won't find a blue or pink oscar.

Oscars are going to be Tigers or "Reds", or albino versions of each. You may under extremely rare occasion see a leucistic or xanthic or another genetic anomaly.

But if there is a bunch or oscars at the LFS that look like they were dyed blue, they probably were

I thought I saw a thread on platinum oscars a little while back. Also heard they lose that shine later and look like standard albinos.

That would be me, and that would be correct....

the oscar in the image clearly has some natural blue pigment.

I was at a lfs today and let me tell you this place has really cleaned up its act!
It is so much cleaner and such good quality stock now.
Anywhoo they had about 6 oscars in one tank they were about 2" each and there was one that looked to be albino BUT it was a steel blue grey, like very noticeably blue!
I really liked the look of him and I am kind of kicking myself now for not picking up a few.
sooo....has anyone seen a fish like this? Am I an idiot for not picking it up?
petfun had some that looked like that. they were selling them as "blueberry oscars". they look weird to me.
