DIE HD-DVD DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
just as MS had no interest in HD-DVD games, dont expect a BR system. I doubt they will do a BR add-on as they are more geared towards the DL/On-Demand anyway. Expect bigger HDD's and/or better support for external drives.

Blue Dragon was 3 Dual Layer dvd's and Lost Odyssey will be 4 Dual Layer DVDs.

Deepdiscount had a fire sale during the holidays. I know alot of people that stocked up over that time. Heroes HD set was $40 and Planet Earth was $35.

If you're a big fan of multiple discs then there's nothing wrong about that. I'm just saying a BR disc can hold a lot more data that HDD or Dual layer discs and are a lot cheaper than HDDs. Not saying MS will make use of it now but it doesn't make sense as to just ditch the whole idea of it. Who knows MS might just use the BR drive to let people watch BR movies only.

If(when) BR does fully take over, I bet whatever plans for the next xbox will be redone to incorporate it. By then players should be cheaper to make a system at the $300 range.

Toshiba just announced another price cut on it's 3rd gen players.
The electronics firm is now set to reduce the normal price of the 1080i-only HD-A3 player in half from $300 to $150; the 1080p-capable HD-A30 and HD-A35 will be available for $200 and $300 respectively.

Funny you mention that. People on the Hi-Def boards are saying it's a good deal to buy the HD-DVD player just to be used only as an Upscale DVD player. LOL!

But seriously at the moment the way I think about it, I don't see myself buying just any movie on Blu-Ray. It would have to be a good action movie or something you really must see in HD to enjoy. I don't think I would be buying regular movies like comedies on Blu-Ray unless of course the price is only a couple bucks or same price as regular DVDs

As for the Blu-Ray players I say within a few years the prices should drop. All my current DVD players only cost me $100 or below. I still remember buying my very first DVD player in Japan for $600.

Did you mean HD-DVD. HDD (Hard Disk Drives) are the storage of choice. I have 6TB with plans to add more.

Not to say that BR disks don't hold a bunch. Dual layer can hold 50GB with more coming but that is peanuts when compared to a hard drive.

HDD = Hard Disk Drive

HD DVD = HD DVD

You can't compare HDDs with a Blu-Ray or HD DVD Disc. These are Optical media. A HDD is an actual piece of a machine and a lot lot more expensive..

there was never a doubt on porn going either way. HD was cheaper and Sony was a tad stubborn in being associated with porn. But with so many PS3 buyers asking, it was inevitable.

if it really wins, prices will drop quickly and reg dvd's will go the way of vhs, just as dvd did once it was accepted. Companies even have BR cameras coming and once the players are cheap so will be the recorders and media.

So roll on Blu-Ray so all prices can drop... should be able to get a BR player, Rec and 50" TV for under $2k this holiday season.

I can get 500 GB disks for 99.00. Blue Ray recordables are still at 40 for a single dual layer. Single layers are about 13.00. Now that external Sata is growing, you can add tons of 500 GB satas and pay 20 cents a gig, and it is growing cheaper all of the time. Eventually HDDs will have built in ethernet controllers with 40GB ethernet and you will be able to plug them directly into your TV which will in itself be a PC.

For media, I have all of my movies on a couple hard drives connected to an HD MVIX. Instant media streamed anywhere or played directly to an HD TV.

I am not shooting down BR, I would rather have them then HD-DVD. But they are by no means as cost effective as current HDDs.

In the long run I agree with MS that most content will be downloaded and available on demand. Eventually movies will air at the theater and be available for download before the first Blue Rays are ready for shipping to the stores for purchase.

It's already happening. I remember paying close to $30 for my Special Edition 2 Disc DVD of 300. Now I see Best Buy having it on sale for $10 :(
But on the upside, I was able to get the Blu-Ray version of 300 as well for around $10 too through a promo on Amazon.

In other words I paid almost 3 times as much for the DVD version than the Blu-Ray version :irked:
