I got told that a diet consisting of just prawn is bad for your fish.

Is this true?

If so, what else can be fed to compliment, preferbley something that doesn't break up in water.

ps. It's for a Gulper Catfish.

pps. no feeders, they don't sell em.

Are you allowed to grow your own feeders?

Either way feeding live feeders to your fish breaks the law. No law about live food as such but cruelty to animals is against the law.
As it is accepted that inverts do not feel pain but vertebrates (which fish are) do that is what makes it illegal in the UK, causing unnecessary suffering, and if you get caught you can get fined and/or go to prison for animal cruelty. All it takes is one friend or family member to dislike it.
The only exceptions are for species known to completely refuse dead or pelleted food or animals which refuse to switch to dead or pelleted food after several attempts.

Which one?

It's really expensive in the UK since it has to be imported by the retailer. Not many have it.

I've used it before for my Malawis though, good stuff.

NLS is not that expensive here in the UK, not much more than hikari.
Hikari massivore is 380g £21.99 incl p&p
Hikari cichlid gold (sinking) mded pellet £8.97 incl p&p (not as large as the other 2 so it is far cheaper but NLS is better IMO after making the switch from this to NLS)
NLS thera A+ 6mm 300g £18.16 incl p&p

If it won't take pellets then I would just stuff the prawns with pellets so you can sneak a balanced diet in.

Whoever said a variety was right. I wouldn't do all prawn because of thaminese but a variety including prawn would be great.

Is it really breaking a law to feed feeders in the UK? That seems intense.

It not the actual use of live food that there are laws against. It breaks the law as it is agreed that vertabrates feel pain and to feed it to a predator that has to kill it, sometimes brutally (think python constricting a live rat), causes unnecessary suffering which is illegal as most animals can be trained onto dead or prepared foods. There are exceptions as mentioned above.

So the same applies to feeding snakes then?

Frozen pinkie ok? Mice no

Silverside ok? Convicts no?

It applies to the feeding of any animal that eats vertabrates. The prey item must be dead, so yes like thawed pinkies and silverside.

To the OP, as well as pellet stuffed prawns, add in raw squid, mussels and fish fillet although I am unsure about oily/fatty fish like salmon.

Good advice guys, will let you know what I get and how it goes. I have been giving them Coley fish fillets as I read that was good and a decent price too!

ps. one of my LFS sells mice to feed to snakes. They are labelled specifically for that purpose. So they are breaking the law?

I myself would never feed anything live even if I could get hold of feeders, I'm just to squeamish and soft, I don't like it at all!

pps. cichlid2006, I know where to get Hikari Massivore 380G for £18.36 delivered if you wanted that again.
