DIGITAL SLR CAMAREA ADVISE help snookn out!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Man, what a bunch of tightwads, lol.

Fish hobbyists have got to be the cheapest people on the planet, lol.

Kit lenses are CRAP.

Ask Li how long he had his D90 before he jumped to FX.

I heard one person mention upgrading down the road. Thats how I feel, even If I buy a new slr in 6 months because I liked the cheaper one so much I dont mind. But for now the cheaper the quicker I can obtain one. Thanks, John

there ya go, john. but watch out for shady people on craigslist. they'll sell you
broken camera and what not. bring a person with you that knows camera a lot
better than you do. you might score on a d300 with that budget..

Go with a D50/D40 or a D90. Good bang for the buck and it will get you what you need until you step up the photography game.

tightwads  it's easy to say that when you got the money to throw $5k into a camera setup that's just a hobby. if i had the money, i wouldnt be a tightwad :)

I thought you'd like that Jose. :D About half the money I've spent on camera gear came from breeding african cichlids. :naughty: $5k is only about half what I've spent, tbh. I did all the upgrades, starting with a D70s. That's why I always suggest people buy the best they can afford right away. There's guys out there who have gotten sweet deals from me on dx lenses. No more! lol

You can't go wrong with a Nikon. As originally pointed out the basic's are all you need to start. Try and buy Nikkor lens if possible. Get a zoom lens so you are covered for tank shots. What you really want to invest in is a decent flash. Look at the Nikon SB-600 or a similar flash that will sync with the "commander mode" setting on the camera.

Good luck. Buy the camera for photography...not just to photo fish. Your best way of getting great photos is learning the basics. You won't get that if the lens is always focusing on a fish.

If you have the money, and you really felt you wanted to get into this and not limit yourself, I wouldn't get a D3, I'd get a D700 which is more or less the same except it's muchhh smaller and you'd actually take it some places with you.

The difficulty is you need to work out, do you want to do this quite seriously, or just play about taking fish photos about etc? If that's the case, get a $800 DSLR or something, you'll be happy. The problem is I know alot of people done that then wanted to upgrade really fast so you end up spending again. I think what zypher said is wise, spend once spend wise, but then I also agree with jcardona in that alot of people just want a cheap DSLR that will improve on their P and S.

I had a D90 then went onto the D700 for it's amazing low light performance, FPS and sensor. I also just drool over the fact all the buttons are on the camera and hardly ever find myself going into the menus. I am saving up for a 24-70 2.8 though over here thats about £1200!
