Dirt cheap filter socks, are they safe??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
just called, shipping for 15 bags is only about $6.00. so even though the bags are a little more expensive its still cheaper than the other site. basically i can get 10 bags for $40 shipped, when 10 bags would cost me $100+ at a LFS :)

and one other things, anybody wash these in the washing machine? no soap of course :) do they hold up pretty good?

I addressed this briefly in Griller's thread about super-fine media, but I'll ask you guys, too... If you were to graduate these socks (one inside the next, largest pores to smallest pores), couldn't you run all the way down to 1 micron without any additional (more frequent) cleaning or extra space? I have used this method in the past in non-aquarium applications & had great success, but I was feeding a very thick mixture through it & letting it settle overnight.

I was looking at McMaster Carr, btw. I was going to call and see if they would work me a deal on them. I spend thousands with them at work.

J, I would ask them is they have a local warehouse. They have them all over the country.

I saw that filter, just trying not to pay $200 for a filter.

thats a great point. as long as the previous layer pre-filters it enough, it will not cause it clog any quicker than if you were running a 100 micron sock alone.

i think the finest i would go is 50 micron though, im sure anything finer than that is too fine with a tank full of big pbass! honestly the 100 micron seems to filter the water as good as my diatom filter. i cant imagine what a 50 or 25 micron filter sock would do!

Stupid questions - if my tubes drain into my sump horizontally as opposed to vertically, could I still use the filter sock? Just rubberband it around the tube or something?

thats exactly how i have it. i use wire though since it starts to get heavy :)

Good deal...add another item on the "to buy" list.

Should I buy in bulk or can you reuse them over and over again? I'll probably do the 10 bag order as well.

I use the 100 micron, 7" felt socks from filterbag.com in my reef tank. They are somewhat rigid and have a hard plastic collar at the top. I just stand them up between the side of the tank and my skimmer and they stay fine for a few days. I change them every 2 or 3 days. I have a bunch of them, and when take them out of the sump, I just toss it into a bucket until I have enough to do a load.

To clean them I just turn them inside out and pop them in the washing machine with some bleach.
