Dirty lil Dodos

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i can only speak from my single experience. i think 2/3s the largest fish is fine for the smaller fish so long as the shoal is large. they hit the 6-8inch mark quickly then slow down. your others should be fine catching up. i introed smaller fish to the shoal before. 2 3inch when the largest was 6inches, shoal of 5. one of them dissapeared. smaller or weakest fish usually gets beat up pretty bad in the beginning. if you see bare meat, should seperate. i've seen the skin broken 3 times, 2wice those fish died, the one that didnt was cos it was seperated, then reintroduced after beefcake program and didn't have any issues.

larger they get, slower they'll swim around. so while i dont think they need a 10fter, wouldnt be comfortable fitting a shoal in less cos at feeding time, they go full boost. I could see one cracking glass in a smaller/thinner tank.

i've got 7 in a shoal. 6-8inchers. tankmates that are eigher significantly tougher than them, and or different shape/color than them, and or larger than them do better.

i agree, great fish to watch. they don't stop. i bet when a dorado dies of old age, it just stops in mid-stroke, it's heart just explodes.

So do you have your Odoe and Dorado housed together?

What fish would you say share similar color/shape and should NOT be mixxed with them?

Lucky for me all my glass tanks are long gone... Nothing but acrylic for me now...

Luckily I have a 10 footer that's just begging for a reason to be used.... Was hoping it would be for adult Armatus, but maybe it can be for adult Armatus AND adult Dorado..... Man that would be a sight.... Maybe some Odoe and Aros for top water.....

they are fine with the odoes, but i think my odoes are abnormally tolerant (from what i've read other owners report) i had them with the 5 larger 9" odoes in a divided 7ft space. plus a silver arrow 16" and near 20" high back arrow, 9" crenicichla, couple 10" Pbass, 15" vatf, 18" channa micro. the dorados kept to themselves.

now they are in a divided 2ft space with 4 odoes because the Channa ate one dorado and one odoe. but yea no issues, it's been a few days now. no torn fins, nada. and since the space is so small, the two species + crenicichla are all swimming in the same space as opposed to seperate water levels.

off topic story:
i thought the dorado may have gotten eaten by the other dorados cos he was the smallest pirat blind in one eye fish. but then i caught the channa with an odoe tail sticking out of it's mouth and knew he was the culprit (prob was the one who nabbed a tarpon before i moved them while back). I tapped on the tank and he vomitted the odoe out, it was torn near in half. fish were together for couple months no issues, but that's how it goes, guess the channa finally got comfy. anyways yes, the tanks way crowded, just holding tank until new set up is complete.

oh and the dorado armatus thing: i haven't tried... on one hand the dorado is one fish the armatus probably couldn't pick on if the dorado was large enough. but what worries me with the dorado is that it moves and bumps into other fish like it's a piss drunk tazmanian devil all the time, and i dont know how a large armatus react to tank mates like this. My atfs certainly didn't like it and were darting around from it, which is a collision risk. that's one reason I'm considering mixing the dorados with trop gar in the new set up. hoping the gar wont be able to catch them.

Bump for an update. You still got all 5? and what sizes are they now?

Yup down to 5 after the biggest killed the smallest. "Hannable" the biggest went to live with a buddy here in Iowa. He now lives peacefully with an Aro, CK, AT, SDs, gar, and Pbass. The group of 5 are probobly 6 to 8 inches. Had them all together for probobly close to 2 months and all seems well. May try to mix them with the Armatus in the future, but still not sure its worth the risk.

Cool thanks for the update.

glad to hear it's doing well with out hannibal. should work. there's a video of a school of piranhas (macs or golds can't remember) and dorados. piranhas were chewing away at part of a dorado and another dorado snatched the remains away. anyways, in that video, i remember the fish population was pretty crowded, sort of like a swarm of bees.

i think in addition to number of dorados, density of tank's inhabitants makes a difference. I've got mine in tight quarters now and no issues. I do notice at LFS's when there's sufficient space, they tend to get more fiesty (even when in numbers).

and it's just a guess but the fish I've seen over the 10inch mark appear to be more settled down. come to think of it, of the larger dorado cohabs I've seen, the most the fish do is follow one another, bump a bit, as opposed to dog fighting. Same goes for single large dorados mixed with other fish that either a) dont resemble a dorado or b) can take it's abuse dont appear to have an issue).

Hannible is doing very well in the new digs..

i hope to throw up a feeding video in the near future.
