Dis-Assemble 800 Gallon Tank and put it back together !

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I too second piano wire or guitar strings. ive taken apart many tanks, and if your panes of glass are together real tight, when you try to get the razor blade in between the panes of glass, you chip the glass. something i wouldnt risk on a tank that size.

I too agree on the guitar string method.. The best string to use imo is an old bass guitar string--the "G" string no pun intended ). Once you get the string in between the panes of glass wrap both ends of the string around a screwdriver handle or some thing similiar and tape it.. Then saw through the silicone.. Works like a charm :grinno:..

got the tank !!!

it took 8 hours to break it down and pack it in to a truck,

The guitar string method was amazing btw.

nonething broke or even chipped,

now i'm trying to figure out whether or not my floor will hold the weight (almost 10,00lbs)

My joists are 2x10s spaced at 12 inches (old school 2x10, so actually 2x10),

any advice ?

also any advice on cleaning off the old silicone,

thanks a bunch guys !! couldnt have done it without your help

I'm subscribing to see progress.

A guy came to reseal my tank after it sprang a leak along the back seam. He used a super sharp utility/carpet knife and placed it flat against the glass and went back and forth a few times. Then rubbed the whole area with alcohol.

clean sharp razor blades and use acetone to remove any residue

Had a structural engineer in today to make sure the floor would support the tank weight plus 8,000 lbs of water.

I might have to sister a couple of joists he said initially, but will have to crunch some numbers and look into the fiber strength of the wood.

Should find out by tomorrow exactly what i will have to do

How long do the 2x10 floor joists span between supports (I understand they are 12" on center, but I'm wondering about the distance between what each 2x10 rests on)? Very curious to see what the engineer has to say about this. I know it can be done, but I've never heard of anyone setting up a tank this large on anything but concrete slab.

Personally what I would do is first try to get a glass guy to take it apart for you.

I would not use anything but piano wire to get the panes apart from one another.

Mind if I ask what the price you were getting that for is .

edit: gratz on getting it apart subd to see the build of this
