I know I was told to relax, and I am trying to. I took a video of my retic, who's disc will not stay flat on the substrate.

[yt]<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/VcfsxHQX_b0&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/VcfsxHQX_b0&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>[/yt]

Nothing to worry about?

I added some carbon and killed all of the lights, just in case.

I am no expert as I have two very sick retic's myself (first rays, not to say yours is sick) but if that is play sand I would remove it asap. The only reason I assume it's play sand is when I put my little guys in with play sand it stuck like that to their disc's and now I have all sorts of fungus problems with them which I believe is a product of irritation from the silica in the play sand... Hope this helps.

It isn't play sand; I got it at the local LFS and the package said it was for fresh water use. The sand does stay on top of their discs sometimes; does that cause fungal infections?

It was the silica (glass) that irritated the disk's on my rays, causing the slime coat to thicken and the sand to stick. The sand sticking didn't cause the fungal infection though I'm not really sure where it came from. If the sand you have doesnt contain any silica then its fine. As for the disc lifted from the substrate, I'm clueless. I am certain the more experienced ray guys will chime in soon enough. The link is to the thread with my poor little guys, see what miles said about the substrate. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=190263

The sand isn't shiny; I don't think it contains silica.

It's prolly nothing to worry about.

As far as the sand..... Shouldn't be an issue.... Matt you have a retic in there that is fine on the same sand right?

I can't really tell if it is or not..... I can tell you this though, IF it is indeed death curl what are you going to do differently? If you have one that's healthy and one that's not I would blame the source of the ray, not your keeping.

Is it eating?

is there any current in the bottem of the tank? that can cause the fins to pull up, I would just keep an eye on him do regular water changes and just make sure he is eating

x2 on the current. Need to know if it's eating.

I can't see the video here at work, but is this Thaddius that is lifting his disk? Do you have a QT tank that is bare bottom? If so I would isolate the one ray to observe the underside of his disk and to watch his eating behavior.
