i love ur tank, discus with a black aro. nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Discus are great fish. The biggest reason people stop keeping them, is because they slack off, and start losing them, or they start deteriorating due to poor diet.

20 in a 180 is really really to much, they need there space. I would get 6/8 max. for a 180. You will really be able to enjoy them more because they got the space to act natural. Get some bogwood wich they can stand under for them as well, they will really thank you for it by being more active as they feel secure.

A tank that big with that few discus, will generally result in stunted discus. Discus can stunt by poor water parameters, and not enough, or poor quality of food. However, they also stunt from burning off too many calories.

I'd recommend at least 18, but you could pretty easily do more, if you setup the tank with auto water changers, or just water change very regularly.

I don't think adding more discus will reduce the swimming of an individual fish...

It does when fish are territorial, such as discus. The different discus will learn to stay away from another discus' territory, which reduces the space they have to swim.

Yeah, I agree. I have 13 in a 125 gal. ranging in size from 4" to 6". Some were as small as 2 1/2" when the tank was set up. Some of course are older than others, but most seem to be steadily growing. The tank has wet-dry filtration, and drip water change. If water quality starts going down, I
will certainly remove a few. Several months have passed, and so far its working.

Oh yeah, discus are NOT boring at all. I have had in the past, and have now, many different fish species. Both marine and freshwater. Even reef tanks. Which are certainly the "money sucking black holes" of the hobby. I must say I enjoy discus the best.
