I am trying to breed discus in a 30" x 12" x 22". I am getting a pair in the mail today, they will be around 4", along with 12 cardinal tetras and 12 hatchetfish. Is that way overstocked? I am going to put 2 filters on and do a lot of water changes. I also have a 15 gallon planted to raise the fry. Any tips to get them to start spawning?

It will be a while before 4" discus will mature enough to spawn. Your stocking for a 37 gallon tank is okay. Eventually, you may want to remove the cardinals and the hatchet fish. Feed the discus well (live blackworms are good for conditioning discus for spawning). Eventually they will spawn. You should add a discus cone for them to lay eggs on .

If you want to breed the pair should be the only ones in the tank. Like said 4inch isn't old enough to breed so how do you know they're a pair? Raising juvies in a 15g planted is a bad idea. I suggest you learn How to raise discus before you attempt to breed.

They just got here, they're 5"

The 37g is fine but do u know if there male and female? Also u can't really tell the sex of the fish until there the full 5-7in. The best way to get a pair is to get 4-6 discus and let nature take its course. Also what type of discus are u getting?

They look better in person

Like Joe and arrow stated, if you want to breed your pair they will be better off in a tank alone with a breeding cone and fed a high protein diet with clean pristine water conditions, live blk worms does work some magic when it comes to triggering some breeding activity. your tank size is fine but it looks like you want more of a community tank rather than a breeding set up. If that is the case you discus would be better off in a group of 5-6 but then again your tank would not be suitable for that. The 15g planted tank would not be suitable to raise young fry. If you want your fry to achieve mamxium growth and be healthy you will need it to be bare bottom and perform 60-80% water changes daily.

Don't try it you simply don't have the room to breed and raise the juvies properly
