Hey guys,

I'm new to this forum and new to discus fish keeping. Basically, i have a 55g tank with 4 (6month old) discus that i retrieved from a lady who was selling them online (she's not a breeder or anything, she was leaving town an needed them gone). As soon as i put them in my tank everything seemed to go absolutely perfect. They immediately swam side to side, and even ate right out of my hand! Of the four however, theres the one runt that gets pushed around especially during feeding time. I've had them since Monday, so 5 days now, and i have not seen him/her eat. Unfortuanately he seems to be the loner of the crowd too which really concerns me. As a precaution, i purchased a tank divider (which at first i mistakenly made it too low where the other 3 fish nicely swam sideways overtop to join the lonely one, which i thought was odd.) I reinforced the divider making sure they would actually be divided this time. Upon observing, it seems that the fish attempt to interact with the lonely runt through the clear divider? I also noticed that when i go to feed, the other 3 fish are eager to eat, whereas the little guy just hides behind i rock. I've noticed he is getting slightly thinner and his black stress bars are prevalent (he's a red melon discus) I am honestly looking for some advice in general for discus and for my current situation on my "pecking order" problem i have here. I attempted purchasing 6 neon tetras to eleviate the stress but i'm pretty sure my clown knife (baby) ate 5 of them!! I'm seeking some life saving advice for the little guy, and am open to any suggestions. Please help! Anyways, i hope someone can help me out and give me some good advice :) you guys rock, i really appreciate your time.

simplydiscus.com is an excellent discus resource. I learned a lot from that site back when I had discus in the 90's and early 2000's.

basically, in any group of discus, there is always a 'runt'. the typical pecking order that discus usually have tends to have one fish being the 'lowest on the totem pole' and get picked on quite a bit.

most times, there is not much you can do, other than to add decor to help create some hiding spots, feed well, and have no less than 4 discus to help spread the aggression out.

adding other fish like neons etc doesn't really help because discus are not aggressive with them, only to those discus lower on their pecking order.

you can try isolating the runt in a seperate tank and feeding that way, but what that usually does is just shift the aggression on the next lowest dominant fish and you have another runt in the making...

And don't add anything.else.

Remember too ~ that Discus require prestine water conditions. The best thing you can do for these fish is water changes water changes water changes weekly.

Make sure your params are good ~ Feed cbw if possible and water changes. Did I mention water changes. I would also turn off your lights for a while and kick that heat up to 86.

Visit Simplydiscus.com I am Kinderedspirit there too. These are mine.

Good Luck with these beautiful fish and require all of your heart:)
