Discus tank on a low budget...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use 55s, 75s, 125s, and have one 240. I also use 37s and 20s for breeding pairs. All will work well for discus, as will other sizes of tanks. The only thing is I wouldn't put groups in anything under a 55. In my experience, bigger is nice but not always better. Smaller discus seem to grow faster in smaller tanks unless they are part of a large group. Of course a very large group would require a larger tank. I have had up to 30 adults in a 240 with a 55 gal. sump with no problems, and around 40 small discus in a 125 with a 25 gal. sump with no problems. The key to any tank is water quality. As long as you keep the water clean, discus are not that picky about tank space. They are not big swimmers, and are social fish that group together anyway. The only time they need space to themselves is when a pair forms, then it's wise to move the pair to their own tank to prevent fights and stress on both the pair and other fish.
