Discus tankmates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
anything mixed with discus has to be done so in a time appropriate manner. you cant just add like 6 adult fish to 8 discus no matter what the discus size the will get starved any new additions should be made as juvies and only 1 or possibly 2 a month. hatchets go well and tetras. angels must be very very young or they out compete for food.i have alot of fish in a 75 gallon 8 discus at once then 2 a month over years. parallel to this you can never ignore the need for filtration, circulation, aeration, water changes and never overfeed.
i hope this helps.

Some Sterbai catfish would also be good. They would help clean the tank eating leftover food. They are nice looking fish too.

I'm fond of ropefish if you can find them. They are peaceful and pretty cool to watch. Not exactly from the same area (they come from the Nile) but should work out.
Here is a write up I did on them several years ago.

hey guys, new to site and thinking about a discus tank. Have south americans now and a community tank. what would be a min size tank for discus? want several..

50-75 gallons is a good size for discus if you want alot of them. any smaller and there's just not enough room after the plants and wood. and remember they need alot of filtration, air, and water changes. High temp too like 85 degrees.
