Discussion-Aspirations/Obligations in the Hobby

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well.... I started int he hobby as just a run of the mill fish keeper. Then things got worse from there.

Now I just try to figure out what my next fish is going to be and then build stuff for the heck of it and see how it turns out. I love DIY.

I didn't really have any aspirations or any goals. I just wanted a tank with fish, then I wanted "that fish" and knew I needed a new tank and so on and so forth.

I come from a long line of fishkeeper and not wanting to be left out I had my own guppies .
hen i was 4yo with a goldfish bowl with 2 guppies. That turned itno yes 100' of guppies.I got my real first tank when i was 10 my goal then was to keep them alive
i was raised in a house where you didn't ask questions right off you looked things up
and if it didn't work then you asked questions. This brings us up to now,my beloved
bichirs.I had seen 1 years before and thought they looked cool along with gars and
lungfishes. So my bf bought me a tank and and my search for knowledge began.
What i found was a large amount of wrong information scattered thru good information. So i decided to collect all the good info in one spot. The primer in
the Polypterus forum Is based on expirence, books, magazines and a ton of scientific
papers.Gathering this was one of my goals in the hobby.-Anne

I also have always wanted a platnium p.b bichir, short bodied but not fully white a hint of yellow :D

My first pet was a betta when I was about 2. Later in kindergarten or maybe 1st grade, I had a very small tank of comets. Later at 8 or 9, I purchased and set up my first tank (10 gallon acrylic tank, UGF) myself. At that point, I don't remember having any real aspirations or plans. I've had fish on an off since. In high school, I got back into fishkeeping big time and ended up with 11 tanks set up at once. Now I've scaled back to one (75 gallon-I'd like to replace it with a 125-150 relatively soon though), but this fish thing is now moving on to be more of a career than a hobby. I'm currently majoring in biology with my main focus in ichthyology. I'm planning on going to grad school and would like to end up either working in some type of institution (zoo, aquarium, museum) or be a field researcher, most likely in the Great Lakes area if possible.

Aspirations one word... RAY!!!!!! :naughty:
But not even close right now :(

when i entered the hobby about 5 years ago i was hoping for a big tropical tank minimum being 60 gallons but unfortunetly my dad used to own a fish shop so he was sought of an expert so he said to start of with a small tank for hardy fish to get into the hobby so i agreed and got a 20 gallon tank to start with it was okay at first got a nice set of fish siamese fighter 2 sunset gouramis and a small albino shark i had that for about a year and a half and thought its time for a change so i sold my tank to a freind with all its inhabitants and headed down to the local fish store (marine aquatics) had a look round at some tanks and then cought my eye on a marine show tank i was hooked and knew a marine is it so i had to save up for about two months during that time i was without a tank :( untill i had enough to get a 50 gallon marine tank i love it untill this day but now im setting off to get a 120 gallon tropical tank and yes im still gonna keep my marine tank but for all you curiouse hobbyists out there im hoping to get in this new tank 2 oscars an arowana and maybe a few discus but when i can i will get as many tanks as i can :)

It all started when my parents where into fish , I can't remember how old I was exactly about 4-5 yrs. I use to help them a lot and spent hour watching the fish I even slept in the living room so I could watch them ALL night but always ended up asleep. When I was about 10 the maid cleaned the outside of the tank and pulled out the outlet pipe to the tank :wall: the water level got low and the heater was out of water and burst the glass on the side of the tank:cry: .
When I was about 15 I had a snake and kept it in a fish tank 2ft with some sand we caught it in our back yard but after a year I released it again. I decide to turn the tank into a fish tank again had some neons, dino's, and a pleco didn't know what I know know. My brother bought convicts  while I was away and threw them in the tank :angryfire on a weekend when I was gone. Came back and all that was left was the convict I was soooo angry with him.
I refused to take care of the tank cause they where NOT my fish , they eventually all died.I put the tank and everything away cause I did'nt want to share a tank with my brother again:banhim: . Years later got married and decide I wanted to get into the hobby again but the tank was broken :(when I went to fetch it from my parents, again my brother took it out and left it out side and it got broken, why he did that he still hasn't told me yet!
After a few years my cousin stayed with my parent she wanted a tank and got a 2ft as a birthday present but run away from home few month later and my dad said that I should take the tank:naughty:. I've had the tank for a year now and getting a 6ft next month as a birthday present from my dad:hearts:, he's the greatest dad in the world.

My aspiration is to.....
#1 actually breed and make money to support my hobby
#2 have more tank - 3ft for my kribs and tiger barbs
- 2 ft for a all neon tetra tank
- 2 ft black widow tetra and leopard dinos
- 3 ft for rams and dwarf gouramis
- 4 ft for African butterfly fish and (some other fish?)
- and various breeding tank (different sizes)
- 5ft brackish water tank
- definately breeding some black ghost knife fish
- and maybe someday very far in the future
marine tank
