Good discussion:) Like most I guess the mistakes have been made.

I was very excited when finally finding a Dovii at 2" in a LFS and buying him to put in a COMMUNITY 125. Yes with plans to upgrade:nilly: Well make me an accomplis to murder... several infact!

Small tanks 20l-29 are great for QTs and hospitals. 55 good for growouts.
75 for most singles and a few mixes. 125 is a decent community for the lesser aggro. Above that can`t comment. At least NOT YET!:D

DOH!!!

You have to tell us what happened to the community :popcorn: Don't just tickle us with a feather like that... ;)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
55 = hell of a GO Tank = Nice single species (smaller species)
20L = GO tank, breeder for cons
75 = singles
125 = Decent community
Above that can`t comment. At least NOT YET! (Me either!!)
of course, some will find fault with my choice.......
How about you write yours and I'll write mine :D
Sombody needs a hug...
What you want to post on a public forum and have a discussion but not have anyone disagree with you? I am sorry that I do not want to join your crusade to get people to first buy monster tanks and then stock with juvinille fish.
OK I have not read all the posts in this thread but heres my 2 cents... Fish should never be placed into tanks to small for them unless something ahs happened to its permanent home where as the owner has no other choice but to put there beloved fish into a small container........ I have a LFS here that will sell an Oscar to someone to live in their 10 gallon for life "they will just need to do frequent water changes" exactly what one fo ym customers told me that the store told them.....
Very true, but what I beleive he is saying is something like "Yes do weekly 50 % water changes, but don't buy that 3" oscar unless you have a 100gallon tank to put it in right now".
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I didn't get that form his statement, but see where your point may be raised. May I say this, My take is Carpediem has seen too many irresponbile Fish Keepers and too many fish suffer because of it. My point is, just as xEchoX has stated, there is a lot of responsible people among us, just as there are morons, but as I stated, "What battle is worth fighting??" If a guy continues to put his 12" Oscar is a 29, and thinks that is ok, we can only state such is wrong IMHO. It's up to him/her too look at there face in the mirror in the morning, but again, we all had to start somewhere......125's don't just fall out of the sky, well unless you are in Indiana! LOL!!!

But good point.....Ill give you that....

Well BadAzz spent the first week hiding. Then proceed to terrorize the G. Danios for awhile. Killed off the 2 Cons and a Pim Cat.
Forced me to put the female Loisellei in the 55. At least he left the Female Sal alone because she hid inside a resin branch alot. Killed a 6" RD:(
Eventually it was him the 7 Danios and a Pleco we had for years. When he murdered the Pleco "WE SHOT HIM" Nah gave him to someone at work who no longer talks to us.;) Not to mention all the airlines and filter tubes and the thermometer and decor... well you get the point:D

All this between 2" and 8" about 12 years ago when we first got the 125.

Not really...

I'll bet you have a whole bunch of tanks, no? So it kind of makes sense for you to use the smaller tanks as growouts for later placement in a large tank. You've already been bitten by the bug, so to speak.

Now, Johnny come lately who wants to fit 25 fish in a small tank doesn't necessarily need the same kind of advice that you might ask for. Agreed?

How about this... I just got in a beautiful little 4" jardini. If you came to me and said you wanted to buy that fish to throw in your 40G growout I would say, "SOLD, you need a styro?". If some guy came in and said he had a 20 gallon with a bunch of other fish in it and wanted to know if the jardini would work, I'd say no. If he persisted and tried trolling for answers that went along with his bent reality, I'd probably say fine, you want to buy the fish, I'll sell you the fish, no guarantee. Being a salesman, I'd probably also try to sell him a bigger tank :D

It's a matter of scruples really. That and I like to see people be successful in the hobby.

Nothing wrong with that... we did do the Cons in the 29.

Check out Fidel bro! You should lived near Philly... would`ve given you Miguel:D

Ive read this whole thread and to be completely honest I am not an experienced fish keeper. I am still new compared to most of you guys ive been a hobbyist for 2 years now. And Ive been almost every perosn you guys have described overstocked tank, then ask if i can add another cichlid, then just upgrading, then having a grow out tank, then the new guy who got a 300 gallon tank for $100 bucks that needs to reseal and replace a cracked top but has no clue how to do it(researching how to still) to now someone who can make the decision to not get a fish i really really want but cannot house properly since i know that i wont be able to get the right tank for them since i want more tanks for fish i already have.

And yes there are alot of people who will say ill upgrade and i am one of them and even though i have a good job that pays very well I am stil unable to get the size tanks i really want. Yes i went from a 20 gallon tank to a 300 in about a year but I think i am an exception since i am only 25 and dedicate alot of my time to fish instead of partying(got into to much trouble) there are alot of people who say Ill upgrade but dont realize the real costs associated with it and when it comes time to do so they realize they cant afford it or rather spend there money else where so they end up getting out of the hobby.

Its entirely up to the person who is looking for the advice if they will even take it. I took it unlike most people so what i do is try to learn new things about this hobby and have realized alot of stuff i have done wrong and corrected them just by reading alot of threads on this website. I am always thinking about what i can do to improve quality for my fish and not what other fish i can get. I also dont take advice from just anyone either I actually see how long theyve been on the board and how people agree or disagree with them to see if peopl are in align with the answer and search for other threads on the subject to see what is the correct answer. Not everyone will do that which means this is just a tempoary hobby for them thats all. Thought i should speak out for the new guys like me who just read thread and dont post very often like i do.

If a person really wont get a bigger tank they really arent a hobbyist in my opinion.

Is it really a temporary tank or are they just saying it so they can get advice cause they know they are overstocked and theyll be told to get rid of there 15 othe cichlids and can just keep one oscar in his 55?
