Dither Fish For Festae

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You never did say what size tank you have them in. Size matters;) but I usually wait till they're around 3" before adding dithers and IMO the best dithers were pure Midas. Not store bought midevils. Midas aren't as naturally aggressive nor belligerent like RD's they can take a beating very well and are great schooling fish. Not to mention just having another type of cichlid helps aide in pairing and spawning. Use a group of Midas, 4-8 and keep them smaller than the Festae.

i just put pink tailed chalceus with mine about an hour ago. I'll keep you posted. My pair is in a 150 with a pike and some plecos. They ignore the plecos and could care less for the pike.

Small silver dollars should work out ok. Other cichlids are hit or miss depending on size of your tank, temperament of fish. It's been my experience that if your going to use cichlids as dithers, they have to be smaller than the festae. Otherwise the festae get intimidated, stop eating and get sick. Good luck in whatever you choose. :)

actually some silver dollars also grow large.
I have red tail tinfoils they will never get any bigger than 9" and they are in a 225 gallon 3 foot wide aquarium.

see, don`t they look happy and healthy?

+1 for. Tinfoil barbs. They make great dithers. I have 6 5"-7" in my 240 gallon. They are great schooling fish and I love it when they play chase with algae wafers. It's funny. But yeah, they are great to channel aggression.

so far the pink tailed chalceus are doing well. they nip eachother but the festae leave them alone. Just added a small trio of HRP's and they seem to bring the pair out more.
