Dither Fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ive used Red Belly Pacu as dithers for my large cichlids (but since they grow 30"+) consider them as an extreme. Silver Dollars, Tin Foil Barbs, For smaller cichlids some Giant Gouramis, Danios, or even tiger barbs....
Just make sure the dither wont steal your cichlids food or they will most likely to become a food source. i usually start by feeding the cichlids with the larger pellets the dithers cant eat. Then add some flake for the dithers. This way the cichlids are pre occupied when its feeding time.

Ok thanks this helps alot. So like sometimes PETCO or PETSMART have sells. Sometimes they have tiger barbs for 5 for 5. Would that work? How many would I need?

Tinfoil barbs are from aroudn Thailand, Veitnam and Singapre area, so if your worried about bio type, I would aviod theses. Barbs are very beautiful fish when grown out. I would probably go for the silver dollars, especially if you can get them for a buck. You just can't beat that!

Ummm.. If you're referring to the "bio-type" comments, that just means they are from different parts of the world. The barbs and jacks should get along. When you say "pair" I assume that they have bred in the past, so you should expect some sort of aggression with a breeding pair of fish.

I have not breed them in the past but they are male and female.

You could set up a real nice Biotype tank by using a school of 8-10 Buenos Aires Tetras's
?? They originate from rivers thousands of miles apart with different water parameters?? But otherwise would make great dithers:thumbsup:
