Dithers are absolutely essential to keeping large, aggressive fish, with less aggressive tank mates. Dithers are fast and agile fish, that swim together in packs, which distracts the aggressor, but they look too large and are too fast to catch.

I always feel sorry for dithers....lol

Danio's and silver dollars make great dithers. Depending on how big your fish are, you can go with anything from regular zebra danios for pint-sized terrors to giant danios for medium sized cichlids to redhook silver dollars for most other fish and even full sized tinfoil barbs for some of the largest fish.

Rosy Barbs are good for mid sized cichlids. School of 6 - 8 looks great and can hold its own.

Most barbs work well as dithers too, forgot about them. But some barbs require slightly cooler water then cichlids. Don't get me wrong, you can do cool water fish in with warmer water fish perfectly (i had a creek chub who did spectacular in warm water) but they just prefure cooler water.

I have a firemouth with my oscars, he works well. He likes to flare back at the oscars and in general stand up for himself, while uniting the parents. All in all a good dither.

i had a goldifsh as a dither because my SH and tem kept fighting.
poor golfish had his fins rippe up and all scales gone.
btw, only the tem attacked the goldfish, not the SH.
the goldfish got eaten one day while i was at school.
