Dithers-Why are they important?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i dont mean to hate on everyone but it is essential to your big guys health to not keep them with anything that will stress them or the other fish you keep.... firemouths with cons jd's with oscars red devils with texas.... they all arnt going to work why add danios into a tank fill it up with junk..... if you have a 125 throw a breeding pair of jd's together everyone needs to understand they shouldnt keep oscars and jd's with fm's and everything else they can throw in there the fish dont do well .... seeing this after seeing how concerned people are with protein percentage and huge filtration makes me feal like everyones heading in the wrong direction.... i persoanly dont have a lot of space to work with... i have a number of tanks setup and would absolutly love to keep more species... i work with a certain fish for as long as i can and i move on when the time comes... fishkeeping isnt going anywhere so please stop stressing fish with all this mixing and dithers and whatever else

I understand what you are saying, but don't agree with it. I love having all sorts of fish in my tank, and having the ability to choose new combos and create different looks is what makes this hobby so enjoyable. Dithers are extremely important for keeping my fish in more of a harmony. Adding the dithers reduces the stress in my tank. The high protein diets and strong filtration encourage fast growth and beautiful color. I wouldn't say keeping my fish happy is going in the wrong direction.

Note- That video was taking after adding a new fish, the tin foil barbs basically saved the new addition.

Yeah Gr8, I feel so bad for dithers...

yeah, but dithers are dithers in real life and it's what they evolved or were made to do, so i don't see what the problem is, really.

I'll have to go along with having dithers. I'm looking for 3-4 for my bare 240gal tank that just has a 22 inch Blk Aro I'm healing up and a 4 inch Green Tex, once the Aro heals up in go the dithers, along with some P-bass. Thinking of going with Tin foils or yellow Tin foils, or possibly golden sharks. I've see a few Amazonia Programs where they show the fish and you see the large aggressive fish fish a few feet away from the SD and othe small fish. So as someone else mentioned its kinda of a natural thing to have dithers with your fish.

What do you mean they were evolved to be dithers?

Isn't a dither basically an artificial function that we have for aquarium fish?

Dither is just a "distracter" fish really.
They most likely have evolved in the wild to become like this. They are fast and agile to avoid predators and stick together to confuse them/make themselves look large. We simply found this out and used it to our advantage. None of my dithers are dying from being chased (a few got eaten at night), but it's not like they live a miserable life. They are thriving and living a great life in my tank, they get chased, but never end up getting hurt.

You mean that they evolved the traits that make them good dither fish as a defense against larger predators. We just exploit this natural adaptation to our advantage.

Anyway, I'm setting up my new 75 gallon this weekend for my Green Terror. I also want to get a pike. What dithers could I use?

I use to have 8 SD as dithers in my 300gal. 2 ended up dying because during WC I spoked them with being over the tank and them slamming into the tank walls and injurying themselves and eventually dying. None of them were ever caught by the Midas/RD or the Aro, they are just too fast.

That is basically what I'm saying, but I wouldn't call it exploitation.

You can try giant danios.

Thank you, perfect example.
