Dithers

So I tried using Buenos Aires tetra as dithers in my 180 gal SA cichlid tank. Largest fish in the tank is a male chocolate. Long story short, he thinks they're tasty :irked:

I rescued the remaining 8 and set them up in a 20 gal with a convict. So I'm trying to figure out something to dither the tank with. Ideally I'd like to get a bunch of something torpedo shaped at about 3-4" and fast.
 
Torpedo-shaped fish don't stand a chance. Try marbled headstanders and silver dollars.
 
The think that kills me is there are two tiny Geos in there that he doesn't even look at.

I was looking at SDs the other day at my LFS, but they were probably still too small. I'll have to do some looking I guess. Thanks.
 
Tinfoil barbs are another option except these grow to 12 inches.:)
 
Pictus catfish make fairly good dithers. Giant danios I imagine would work out pretty good too. Generally though, dithers need to be deep bodied in order to avoided being made lunch. Silver Dollars work out best for this.

You could try Fei Fengs, Headstanders, catfish, silver dollars, and some of the larger barbs like mentioned. Bala Sharks might be another option. . .
 
Yeah, I'm shooting for a big school of something to inhabit the upper area of the tank. I've owned tinfoils, bala, and SDs before, I've even had luck with Black Skirt tetra before. I was just shooting for something I've never had.

Not really to sure, but I think they are parasitic fish.
I have filamentosa barbs and they are very active and grow to a size where they won't get eaten (about 6").

You just made my day. I saw them at a LFS the other day, and couldn't remember what they were for the life of me.
