A little late but I've used pvc with cross's and tees. I build it in the tank one peice at a time so if your opening is smaller than the height and width of the tank it doesn't matter.

Thats a great idea
My male has started to really harass my much younger female ever since he's reached sexual maturity. If I need to divide them, I'll probably use this method
