the whisper 10 is only $12 at most places. I see smaller pumps for breeding tanks that are 5g for under $10

i have a whisper 10 already its not enough filtration. im thinking about getting a micro canister because its just cheaper in the end.

Sponge filter is the easiest for a 10g tank.

For the bucket put it above the tank and pump the water to the top of the bucket,return out the bottom of the bucket.

Bury the sponge deep in your gravel and you will get even better filtration and lmuch onger intervals between sponge cleans. You will have to gravel clean substrate though, but you should already be doing that.

Your bucket idea will also work.
