DIY 6 Gallon Bucket Canister Filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I did my 5 gallon bucket like an eheim filter. Drilled a hole at the bottome and make tube to suck in the water. Then I filled it up with carbon, bio balls, and blue foam. Then for the lid I drilled a hole for the 500 gallon powerhead sucks the water up and goes back to the tank. Simple and works great! I love 5 gallon buckets...

how do u clamp down the lid securely like ehiems?? or at least secure the seal around the lid so water doesnt come out??

as long as the siphon brakes when the power goes out, the powerhead is pumping as much as the overflow delivers, as long as there is negative pressure there wont be any leaks...
That and o-ringed lids...

Eventually, I am thinking of using these as lock downs for the lid. Using some sort of metal brace to actually lock down with.

The J bend would be in the "ribs" of the bucket. I would add some aluminum to the rib for more support.

The black piece has a nut inside it. Will make for a neat looking lock down system like the Fx5.

Well, it got put on hold for awhile....then..... it some how disappeared. Its no longer in the house. I live in an apartment in my mothers house and some how thousands of dollars worth of my stuff was thrown out included a perfectly good mazda rotary engine which i had plans for. Pissed me off. I was told my friend bob came and picked up the filter. I called him and he never took it.

Sooooooo. Once I get some more funds which I should get shortly. I will build another filter one and complete it.

I got a pm asking about the pics in the thread. I will see if I can get them working again.

Working on uploading pictures of this project again...... Pictures should be ready shortly.

I'll be trying to quote from earlier posts of mine and adding the pictures then.

Here is another design.

With this design, the pump would be on the output side. With vacuum in the output pipe, the light blue tube rising from the output pipe "should" allow air to escape. Even when the pump is off, the filter should purge enough to prime the pump. I doubt it would purge 100% on its own though. Although it would be a cool idea to play with, with some small pipe and tubing and a sealable container.

With this idea though, there will be a tiny bit of bypass using 1/8" or 3/16" solid tubing but nothing that would be noticeable.

The canister will be full as in no air at all after I finish the design.

Here is my DIY bulkhead im going to try out. The barbed fitting will be inside the canister at the top above the mechanical filtration. This will get the whirlpool effect started.

I wont need the extra Acrylic pictured above with this bulkhead.
