the saw shavings from cutting pvc works great for this too. you just have to make sure your prefilter on the outlet is fine enough.

That is very, very nice. I would love to have an inwall tank just so I would have a nice room behind it to experiment and try as many different diy filtration toys as my heart desired. It's not so easy when the tank is on the first floor in the dining room like mine. 
I forgot to ask, could you show some pictures of the tank that you are filtering with that bad boy?

What are the rough dimensions of the bio-reactor? How many gallon system is it on?

Would the bioreactor be more efficient if the water entered from the bottom and was forced to rise through the media, rather than entering from the top and leaving at a similar level? Do you find there are any dead spots in the reactor?
