DIY Blue LED lighting?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It said around May 4th.

Aside from those you mentioned earlier, is there anything else I would need? Planning to go to Lowes tomorrow to get all the tools/parts you mentioned.

I also just bought 1 driver and 1 dimmer for the LED. Is that right? Are there only going to be one on/off switch for both white and blue LEDs? Or are they going to be separate?

Well I read the article (s) which lead me to another and that went on for awhile haha. A lot of those threads are from 2010 and they don't really know what they are talking about. I did look into Cree when I first started my led but not too in depth. What I got out of it is that the Cree lights are more reliable. I guess how would anyone know since a lot of those lights are rated for 50,000 plus running hours that's around 5 years if you ran them 24/7 but most people only run there lights for 8-14 hours/day do that's about 10 years. That is if they have proper heat sinks and the led isn't getting hot. And I was reading something about different colors with in the Cree lighting so you would have a full spectrum of light for the plants. but I think that's something more for corals.

Your lights are not the same as that guys if we looked at the same thing. Are you talking about the guy that's got like the warm white and cool white? He said he didn't like the color of the cool white which is just pure white. The 3000 Kelvin lights (warm white) are more of a yellowish color somewhat like a halogen flood light.

People always bash on the Chinese led lights on eBay but I've never had a problem with anything I've gotten. My lights are still running like the first day I got em. I think there are just too many people that think they know what they are doing and don't wire it right or don't buy the right drivers and stuff. I've made a bunch of fixtures but sometimes I still get confused on some aspects of the LEDs. Your lights are gonna grow plants. Heck you could probably grow plants just with the blue lights.

Thanks for clearing that up!

I'm good with the lights that you mentioned. I actually prefer pure white over the yellowish lights. Just wondering though, are we going to be able to have separate switches for the white and blue lights so I can leave the moonlights on at night and use the white lights during the day? Also, just a thought, can I use a 10W version of the white lights that you mentioned instead of the 20W?

You can use 10 w if you want you will probably need at least 3 lights per side. Also if you want the 10 w I wouldn't go with the same lights as the 20 w. for the 10 w they make a really efficient heat sink with a fan I like this heat sink it really keeps the led cool.

Do you have a link for that 10w LED?

Just asking cause if things go well and I don't screw up, I might make another LED lights using the 2 other fixtures I have for my brother's tank. But I'm not really in a rush with that right now. I just want to get mine working first. :) I already ordered all the LEDs you linked me to. Just waiting for it to be delivered.

Thanks!
