DIY cooling fans ??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I currently have a 120V fan hooked up to an inline duct fan which is ductaped to some 4" PVC which eventually is sized down to 1.5" flex hose which goes to my cold air return duct on my furnace.

Don't actually have my tank up and running yet to say how much this type of setup makes a difference but I am getting decent flow out of the fans with close to 30' of space between the tank and the cold air return.

Obviously access to an unfinished basement makes this setup much easier.

When you say 'exhaust', are you meaning having 2 (or 4) computer fans sucking the air out of the tank?? I'm guessing this would cause a vacuum and pull air into the tank via the mesh I will have in the feeding hatch and out through the fans thus cooling the water through evaporation.

Does that make sense??
Sorry for the late reply. And yeah that is exactly what I meant.

Cool :headbang2

Another problem I thought of is, how can I protect these fans from getting wet from the moisture in the tank (evaporation) or if my bass splashes the water (which he does from time to time). Would a fuse/trip in the electrics be enough here??

Yeah your on the right track. I thought these would be in a hood over glass tops for some reason. That makes it tough. In that case I can see running a bare duct (4" dryer hose either in to the attic where you can place the fan to pull air. that would keep the fan dry. Or what I do is use coated screen tops for the summer with no lights and position fans to blow air across the top of the water. This increases evaporation but you get a lot cooler water that way.

Mmmm, I guess I need to do a little more planning then. I'm sure glad I posted this here before just diving in and burning my apartment down
Dont cry bro :) screen tops are cheap and household fans are cheaper. I would make you a set of screens I made all mine in my shop but your a bit far away.....

Like a window screen material, instead of glass. Terrarium lids for reptiles are made out of wire screen a lot of the time.

yup. when the weather here gets 110 degrees I put those tops on and train a fan on the water surface water evaporates pretty quickly but it does help keep temps down.
