Stay away from grapewood/grapevine. That's not good for the fish (I think it leaches something that is harmful to the fish). Check the wood types first before you buy... the harder the wood, the better. (That's what she said!) :ROFL:

I like this idea. I usual saw the tips off the bottom of the wood to make it flat and silicone it to a tile. Your method is definitely a bit faster and less permanent if need be.

You have any tank shots of the wood in the tank bud?
 
I also agree that it is a great idea and will be trying to do something simular.
