does the lid snap-on or does it have threads?

Its threaded but I had to silicon it to stop it leaking even though it has an o-ring.

I am building another one on Friday and I am going to silicon it then on Sunday when its dry try and open it up to see how hard it will be to break the seal. So I know what I'm up for when it's time for maintenance.

My other option is to find a better o-ring but it seems that the lid has a grove for the o-ring and getting another my be pointless.

nice job.

Can you add silicone to the O-ring groove to try and raise the o-ring to achieve a tighter seal?

It's hard to see on this photo but the lid section where it meets the drum is wider. The Yellow is the o-ring the red is no o-ring and when the lid is done up it moves slightly, it seems to hold water but once any pressure is on it ie when connected to tank and pump running the leak starts.

I would take a small amount on your finger or something and put a thin layer at the bottom, insert the o-ring and put some on the inner side of the o-ring to hold it in place?

Yes, I will give it a go.. I siliconed a drum the other week, just to see how hard it would be to remove the lid and there's no way the lids coming of, short of cutting it.

The tank is defiantly clearer with this filter added, will be building another this week or next.

Awesome job. I may have to try something like this.

Thanks! Just need to perfect the sealing of the lid without or with little silicone so it can be serviced.

All up it cost me about $80 AUD + the Power Head $ 45 AUD = $125
