diy external canister plan

I use a few 7 gal plastic drums for various filters, I normally have them set up wet/dry style with inline pumps. Since they come with o-ring seals for the screw top lid I decided to make a diy canister filter out of one, it worked ok but the vacume from the pump ended up sucking the sides in, so you'll need a container with pretty stiff sides to resist the "suck".

I am pretty damn handy and can fabricate pretty much anything. I spent several weeks searching for the "right" canister vessel, but never found one I'd be happy with. You can get open top drums, but they are not rated for pressure. You can get a sump from Home Depot, but they only come in 3 1/2' upright container with more holes than needed. The last I found is a pressurized paint container through Harbor Freight. NONE of these look good enough to be displayed and really aren't worth using because of prices, except for the open head drums (but then again no pressure). Canisters are inexpensive, really. They are built in mass quantities by companies who have access to all the motors, baskets, etc. I gave up and just bought canister fiilters. Still kind of bugs me, but I know they look good and operate properly.

The only thing I’ve found that could be reliably used to make a canister filter is PVC pressure pipe. The only problem with this is that you tend to have to buy it in long lengths.
Buying a few feet, which would be relatively cheap doesn’t seem to be an option.

There are a lot of options for making your own canister. I know a lot of us DIY people have thaught about it from time to time. But from a reliability standpoint alone most of them fall flat....after all....why try to reinvent the wheel so to speak...

This, and also I would think most DIY'ers would just make a big sump rather than muck around with canister designs.

Hopes of another DIY'er dashed on the rocks. :nilly:

Where's your sense of adventure?

You don't learn by buying. :D

thanks Dr joethe diying mood is back again. im just going to try it with one of those lock & lock with the filter in it then like i said its going to something like the eheim classic 2213 but an even smaller version.the cheapest canisters i can find here is at least $50 if i diy-ed that i should cost no more than $20 including the pump and all those stuff i need like silicone tubes etc.

Do remember to try it outside or in the bathtub first :nilly: :D.

Good luck and keep us posted (w/pix of course) don't make us hunt you down :headbang2
