DIY - Make your own Cheap Media

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
With this design it will be extremely easy to add a vortex settling chamber BEFORE the bio filter. You dont need any additional pump to drive it and you take predominantly clean water to the bio filter, leaving the sludge to be emptied out periodically. Google for "Vortex settlement chamber" if you are unsure what I mean. They are very effective and easy to DIY too if you wish.

Thanks FishDance and Dr. Joe for the comments. Yes i think further addition of either a vortex settlement combined with a bottom drain to clear the sludge would be in order.

Have to give another go at the design to addin those features. thanks for the suggestions guys.

Dr. Joe, I stay in Klang about 33Km from Kuala Lumpur the capital city of Malaysia.
If you are travelling around here do let me know as we got a few good fish shops around the area. i am only 45 minutes from the KLIA airport.

Am preparing some write up on the LFS and will post once the pics are edited and ready.
That will be in a another new post.

Good point fishdance, I have made several slow flow one from sand filter tanks.

AW7020 please do keep us posted and thanks for the invite (you never know ;))

Right some changes are in order. Added either a vortex or settlement or some Basic physical filter media before the the plastic straws media.

Something like this??

And not forgetting also have to add a bottom sludge outlet to the filter as noted from the Doctor's post.

Here's the start to building the different items needed to contain all that cheap plastic straw medium. I was lucky to get a abandoned water filter container. The type you would use to filter the incoming town council water b4 entering the house. This was rather old a crack on the top of the fiber glass container.

Needed a little painting and a bit of work. so here are some pics to show what i had to do. First off some pic of the container, painting, and pipes with
slots/hole cut for the out let, and simple jets for moving the semi floating straws around.

Before fitting the whole assembly back into the container some white plumber tape were fitted around the threads to help to seal up the assembly. Now time to test and see whether any leaks before filling with the media. If you want to know how long the pipes are each square tile in the picture is one square foot. so the pipe is about 4.5' long and the container about 5' in height.

It's time to fit the pieces together and fill the container with the media. That have to be done first b4 screwing in the bulkhead assembly. Then it will be time to test for leaks and then to run the setup for a few weeks to access the results.

All the pieces ready for assembly. Rather simple steps. Put in the cut straw pieces, assemble the outlet slotted pipes and the inlet jet piping. Put the bulk head into the container. The entire assembly is first taped with water proofing tape to ensure a water tight seal. Then it will be ready for the final piping connections to the pumps and the rest of the filter system.
