Pipe Fittings and the Fishes in the Cement Tank. 9 Pacus, (Always hiding) 30 Nile Red Cichlids (Tilapia) 20 Red Jews Cichlids plus 1 Koi. The filter have been running for 3 weeks now. See the gunk on the outlet pipe in the close up picture. The water is still clear with feeding 3 times a day.

Just one thing I would mention: straws are of the soft plastic known for its chemical leaching and fast breakdown properties. Its why I try to avoid drinking out of soft plastics cups. Its probably super-minimal, but for the safety conscience people.....
 
love this idea. next time you need to cut your straws try a band saw it would take about two min. i did it for my sons school for some sort of art project their class was doing.
 
sorry to jump in on this thread WAY WAY WAY late ...
just curious, i guess

lets say "somebody i know" ;) has a tank that is a boder line overstocked, and the water tends to get foggy even though the filtration is decent.

if he were to cut up a ton of straws, and add them to the sump (floating?), would this help as an addition to the bioball trickle and canister filtration that is already in place?
 
Suggest to your friend that he get a diatom filter.

Otherwise we'd need to know the friend's tank chemistry.

i use straws in my can filter and all of HOBs , works perfectly
i do sponge,straws and scrubbies. never use carbon and water is crystal clean
