diy overflow help

This is my overflows on my 180g

I have found that its harder to get air in it with a horizontal intake.
 
Do you get a hideous sucking sound if its vetical? Also, does the pvc need to go that far down into the tank? What if I just put an elbow on it right at the water level or even a couple inches below it?
 
best pump for the buck is a quiet one IMO.

If its working right and there is no air getting caught it shouldn't make a noise. The piping doesn't need to go all the way down but i remember there was a rule to follow...i'll try dig up the links for it, actually i think someone on here already has the links on a thread...
