hi i tried to make this overflow system. what i did i let the otherside get immersed in the tank fully then close the downward outlet side and sucked the water from top.. It should start working but it didnt.:(

I am testing it in a smaller tank so that when it work fine i'll make one for my tank 4.5ft tank.,

Did you only submerse one side? If so you need to submerse (or it is best to) both sides as your sucking up the water or else ends up running out of water to complete the siphon.

Design wise looks fine, but how did you suck the air out were you just sucking on one side? If so that is probably the reason as not all air would be purged that way and the siphon wouldn't start. The best way is to drill a hole at the top of the siphon and squeeze an air tube into it silicone around it and suck all the air out that way and cap the line or prefferably get an aqualifter pump to keep sucking out all the air as it will build up over time.

Guys, i am not able to understand, I got ur point Neo that o had to submerge the otherside in the water. But when u suck water from one end of pipe the suctions builds even the other end is not emerged in the water.hey one more thing i hadn't glued the pipes they are tightly fitted so that no lequage .

If things aren't glued together that will allow air to seap through the joints and cause the siphon to fail.

Instead of sucking the air through the other side of the siphon, you should do as I suggested and put a hole in the top of the siphon with an air tube. if you don't get the air almost completely out (which you won't with current method) the siphon will fail. Even if you got it started occasionally you will need to purge air again and unless you want to stick your head in your fish tank to suck out the air again you'll want to try it this way.

I am following this daigram. For over flow. My tank is 4.5ft and 2feet height and 1.5ft wide.
I got a small glass slab sort cutted but glued on one corner. I can work without this overflow system my simply removing that glass and make the overflow from there and make a glued chamber filter behind the tank. But u dont want that instead i want this bucket filter.
Guys please tell me whats better i am little bit confused.

...And you followed the diagram correctly the only thing the diagram leaves out is a way to easily prime the overflow which is what I explained above, I have made three of these I know what I am talking about.

I didn't put the airtube at top at first either you can go Jenna Jameson on that thing all day long and it won't work, that is where the airtube comes into play. you would put it where you see the light yellow marker at the top of the siphon.

I needed that... i was very nearly ready to reply with a simple statement about the airline, but yours is much more descriptive. :grinno:
