Ok my overflow has been acting up a little recently. Lately is has been sucking in a lot of air and has gotten pretty noisy. What usually causes this in the DIY overflows?
Is it a durso stand pipe? I take it the hole as the air feed is making allot of noise. Try cleaning it a little incase some algae built up. Sometimes that hole gets clogged and a full siphon will pull, water through. That's when I know I need to clean mine.

Ok I turned my pump down till It got quiet. No algae or anything at the opening so I think I am going to build another overflow so that it doesn't have to work so har.
I would try putting a cap on the external up pipe with a small 1/8" hole in it. I would just press it on instead of gluing it.
What is the purpose of the Y intake instead of just a single straight pipe intake? You could try crowning the tops of the intakes with angled slots. Just use a handsaw and cut a small slot 45 degrees from perpendicular every 1/4" around the top of the intake. This induces a swirling motion to the incoming water and reduces gurgling. I don't know if it would be effective on your Y intake though.
I did the Y just so if something clogged one the other would still flow. I went a head and built another overflow with 2'' pipe so combined I should be able to run my pump full bore and get around 2200gph.
