DIY overflow issues

A 3" overflow should cover 2,220 gph, but I'm not 100% on that. My guess is that you have air built up in the "U" section of the pipe and you need to purge that air. The sound is the trapped air getting in the way of the water trying to move through the pipe.

The cause may actually be that your overflow is a bit too big. On smaller pipes, more water flows through which helps eliminate any trapped air bubbles.

your pump might be winning your overflow say overflow 49% and your pump 51%..so the water goes a little bit higher and the tornado looking thing stop and starts thats wat is making that noise

or get a cap i drill a little hole on top

look at my overflow

can you take a video of your overflow doing that noise
that would help id the problem
also your overflow sucks alot of water so the more water the noisier

Drilling the tank is not an option. The overflow being too big is not possible. Once the paint cures in my 2nd overflow it should help move enough water.air does make its way into the U at the top but my aqualifter quickly removes it

Now that you've stated that you have an aqualifter we can rule that out. Having this information up front generally helps us diagnose your problem. If you don't know how many GPH a 3" pipe will flow, how do you know that it isn't too big?

How big of a pump are you running? Honestly, if you are running a 3" drain and you are adding a 2" to keep up, you are either running a pump that is most likely too big for your setup, or you have a flaw in you overflow. Something isn't right.

ohh **** I thought I stated earlier it was a 1.5" overflow! Sorry, I'm not used to not having my stuff in my signature. I am adding a 2" overflow. My pump is 2420gph@1ft and is apox 4' from the sump.I have a ball valve on the pump output apox. 5/8 open. However.... Prior to this pump I had a 800gph at 0head and the overflow was still very noisy. I built a new overflow but have an air leak at one of the unions connecting two elbows. Trying to fix that before I start cutting and replacing parts

Ok so the Two elbows that go over the top of the tank, that have the breather tube for the aqualifter in it is leaking. I applied extra glue where the leak is at the two connected Elbows with no luck. Are there any other options other than cutting and putting new elbows in? I really don't want to shorten the overflow.
