now heres another thing i was worried about the shop vac idea,will ashop vac be able to handle large clumps of string algae and thick muck?

The shop vac itself won't be the limiting factor there, the filter floss will be. With the shopvac all you need to worry about is that you don't suck up your snails, fish or plants.
