DIY Potho lid and lighting

this maybe a stupid question, but where do you get pothos? lol. So you just stick the root/stem through the egg crate, and into the water, and it grows? Is the eggcrate mandatory, or can you just float the pothos? Thanks, -Justin.
found a Old Whisper cheapo Filter, stuck some pothos in w/ gravel. This will be a test run and eggcrate or some diy for pothos stand later on
