DIY pvc overflow question/concern

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use slip fittings for my bulkheads. Although I have only used one external overflow box before, I didn't think they used bulkheads? I was under the impression the flex hoses slip into the overflows and attach somehow? If you are using a bulkhead I would go the slip route and glue it in.

well according to the place I was thinking of ordering the overflow box from says its a standard bulkhead but is not a standard thread on them and was told I wont find anything to fit it ?

So yes, those do use actual bulkheads. I would get a slipxslip bulkhead for it, though any should work so long as the slip side is on the side with the nut. You want your PVC to slip into the bulkhead, not thread into it

Ah ok, and this "slip" fitting is available at like home depot or homehardware ?? Also I'm un firmiliar wione of them... Could you post a pic of what you mean and how they would work ?

Sale rep from eshopps just emailed me back and this is what he sent me about the bulkheads that are in the 1800 overflow box -
The bulkhead is 1.5 inch slip fit - not sure if you can use a standard
bulkhead because the bulkhead is made to be used with the PF-1800.

As far as I know the aquarium style bulkheads have a lower profile than ones from hardware/home improvement stores. Normally you'll have to order them online or at a local fish store.

For comparison the sched40 1.25" bulkhead I bought from a farm supply store utilized a 60mm hole, if I purchased an aquarium style bulkhead I could have ran a 2" bulkhead in that same 60mm hole.

All of thr bulkheads ive found at the hardware store or home improvement store look like these uploadfromtaptalk1415407270967.jpg

Hmmm, I wonder if any LFS would have any of them.... Might almost be easier to buy the opps drain hoses but according to there site there only 1-1/4" not 1.5" and down steeping seems dumb IMO when I'm starting with 1.5 on the box... How do these slip bulkheads work exactly ? I've never seen these before

Is this what you mean I need ?? http://www.petsandponds.com/en/aquarium-supplies/c378109405/p17532789.html they also have also slip bulkheads if you click the bulkheads/fitting/plumbing option

Its a normal bulkhead. There are no internal threads. a pvc pipe has to be put inside the bulkhead and glued like a normal plumbing fitting.

You only need to glue exterior pipes. Inside the overflow box pipes can just be dry fitted since theres no danger of leaks.

Ah ok, so if the bulkheads are 1.5" on overflow box how big of slip bulkhead do I need for it to work ?? And is what I linked above what I will need for it to work? This whole slip bulkhead is new to mew so bare with me lol

Slip or threaded (internally) makes no difference what size hole you need drilled in the glass (or in your overflow in this case)

You can reference that link. Theres lots of places to order them. I got my lifeguard aquatics bulkheads on amazon for cheap.

If the manufacturer calls for a 1.5" bulkhead buy a 1.5" bulkhead.

Be careful though, a 1.5" bulkhead will not fit into a 1.5" hole. The hole will always have to be drilled larger to accommodate the bulkhead fitting.

Like my tank has 1" bulkheads, but the holes are 1-3/4" to accommodate the fittings. My 3/4 bulkheads fit into a 1-3/8" hole.

Hope that helps?

Ok basically I'm going to have a eshopps 1800overflow box and wanna attach a 1.5" pvc pipe for it to drain into the sump ... And was told a slip bulkhead will work to attach a pvc pipe to the bottom of my bulkhead that's in the overflow box
