DIY stand height?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the bottom dont matter as much as the top. if the middlle leg ever causes the top of the stand to sag causing a space between it and the stand the bottom of the tank can come un-siliconed from the front or back panes of glass. best way to avoid this is cutting some styrofoam the size of the bottom of the tank and placing it on it.

I found somewhere about Aqueon/AGA voiding the warranty if styrofoam is used under their tanks. I feel like I just keep arguing with you lol, thats now what I am trying to do and I appreciate the help.

lol i get that alot... but that stand look awesome. i might do something along that lines instead of refurbishing mine seeing i dont like mine anyway.
i just hear that in case of uneven surfaces to add the strofoam. just from past threads not from own experiences.

Yeah. I think if I build the stand correctly and it supports the tank properly it should be fine, I am just not entirely sure how to do that with the dip in the floor itself and the uneven ceramic tiles.

i'd be worried of cracking the tiles but all i can say is try having all the egs touch evenly. if you arent going for looks i'd say use shims.

Shim, shim, shim, until the top of the stand (the surface the tank sits on) is level, but more importantly, 100% FLAT. The higher you make the stand the more chance of it being wobbly and also....how tall are you? Do you want to have to stand on a ladder when you want to reach the bottom of the tank??

i made a 38" tall stand for a 300 gallon... no problem...

How often do I need to shim? do I need to put them every few inches or so, so that the weight on the stand is evenly distributed? Im 6'0, but I would would probably have to stand on something to reach the bottom.

I don't care if the tiles crack, lol.

Crap. I just realized that there won't be much width inside the stand for a sump, only like 9-10" between 2x4's or 4x4's.

Maybe I should just have a metal shops fab up a steel stand, then I will have more space inside the stand & the metal will be able to span over small gaps without any problem. Then I could just skin it with wood to make it look nice.
