Thanks to your help. ;) It made it a LOT easier, being able to check out your pics.

I got very lucky with the drip plate. We had to cut off a couple of the tabs on the inside of the rim to make it fit in the tank. There is only way to get it in and out.

Rallysman came down on Monday night to help me finish the plumbing. We got all the plumbing done and the tank filled and running in just a couple of hours.

I just received all of my bio balls in today, so I am getting ready drop all of them in the sump. I will try and get some updated pics tonight.

I have a wood rim on my tank that is to be my sump. What is the method for removing this thing? Will the structure of my tank be weakened if I remove it? Thanks. Awesome sump you made there, obviously. I am using your model along with the one that your model is based on and another very similar model, et cetera.

I was worried about removing the plastic frame, so I made it work while leaving it on the tank. We did end up cutting some of the interior tabs (that normally hold the lid) that way I would be able to pull the pieces in and out.

I have heard of tanks eventually splitting if they didn't have a center brace...I wasn't going to take any chances.

What a great set up !! I have wanted to make one for ages for my 135 but am a bit Leary......I have a 33 gallon spare tank ...would that be big enough ?
Can a guy use pvc plate for dividers and can you have too many holes ie: 1/8 inch holes spaced 1/8 inch apart ? As I have that material from a DIY under ground filter set up ..I have more questions but will leave it a that cause his is my FIRST post and I haven't even introduced myself :) I am bill and live in Vancouver Canada :D

:welcome: to MFK Bill

I am sure that a 33 gallon would be good for your 135. I am planning on doing a similar one with a 29 gallon sump for my 180.

As far as the holes I would start with a few, spacing them equally apart, and slowly adding more. My drip plate keeps about 1/8" - 1/4" of water on top of it. If you have too many holes the water may not get spread across the bio-balls completely.

Please let me know if you have any more questions and be sure to take pics as you build your sump.

The sock is to act as a mechanical filter, and I can't speak for JD_man, but I don't think that sock is the bluelife. Can't be for sure though
