Without looking at the numbers, I don't think two is going to be enough.
The vertical lengths are irrellevent in the "horizontal flow" designs.

You use a check valve. Install it in the inverted U just like in the traditional pvc overflow.

To compound things before I offer the explanation that I had neglected...
a three inch pipe has nine times the cross sectional area that a one inch pipe does. And a four inch pipe has 16 times the area. See the pattern? It is because of the formula for the area of a circle (pie are square), A=pi x r^2.

If you multiply the radius (or diameter) by two, then you are also squaring the 2 (or whatever number).

you can get better flow if the pipe from the second chamber was threw the bottom.
If it fills up this is called a load but usually it will never fill (depending on the flow rate)

I also have the little voices in my head whispering all these great ideas. At the end of the day I am gonna build a filter like Kaiser-Sousay just build, just adding 2 foam prefilters and making it the primary filtration.
