I either have the option of using angle iron or square tubing. Which one is stronger and what size tubing should I get? The tank is a 233 gallon 1" thick acrylic tank. Dimensions are 42"Lx32"Wx40"H. Filled up with substrate and everything it will weigh around 2450lbs when everything is in it. I was gonna do a design much like msmasspoly. See http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=143532.

Thanks!

3" is overkill.

2" x 2" or 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" at 3/16 or 1/8 thickness is more than enough.

the only reason to even go to 2 1/2 is for constructability, it gives you more workable surface to weld on

2"x 2" .250" angle would be plenty strong enough... You don't need the cross braces, It will be strong as long as it is built and welded correctly.

I'm know because I am a welder and build stands to hold 10" thick peices of granite and use 3"x 3" .250" angle.

That's why I figured 3", but you're right it's overkill for strength...

i would use 1" x 1" box. 1/8" or 3/16 wall thickness. the bracing is over kill too. just gusset the corners. less material just as strong. you have a short span of 42" on the long side. so if you use 6" gussets you only have a free span of 28".
