do all you guys have carbon in your tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There ya go. I don't have the patience to be changing it that fast, but after a month or so I just cut open the cartridge.

Your method is a good one, I just use sponges because when I switched from my old filter it was the easiest way to seed the new filters. It works well so they never left.

It also suppose to remove bad odor from the water

I always have activated carbon as I believe it can help control some organic compounds and harmful chemicals in the water. It can also help reduce tannins released by driftwood which I have. Other than that, when just in there, it can house some BB. Some sites say that it should not be permanent in the water as it can release back the chemicals it has adsorb. Only recently I have found that it can be re-activated by putting it in boiling water.

I stopped using carbon the second I found out about Purigen (few years ago), not only does it not wear our as fast but is easily recharged.

I keep some around just incase I have to treat with meds and need it for removal. I don't see it as a normal filter medium but more as an emergency back up.

It's kind of like that saw dust they sprinkle on vomit for cleanups; I wouldn't clean my floor every day with it but it sure does help clean up puke.

Agreed.

I only use carbon to remove impurities in the wate ie medications. I cut out the back of the cartridge on the HOB filter, remove the carbon and leave the blue mesh to filter out particles..........................
